Ipswich’s booming buildings and population

Ipswich’s population and building boom continues unabated.

Council’s Planning and Development Quarterly Activity Report for March-June 2018 confirms the city’s continuing high growth rate of 4.3 per cent annually.

Recent ABS figures revealed Ipswich as one of the fastest growing cities in Queensland and in the top 10 nationwide.

Planning, Development and Heritage Committee Chairperson Cr David Morrison said as of 30 June, the population had increased by more than 2000 residents in the last quarter.

Ipswich had previously cracked the 210,000 mark in the January-March 2018 quarter.

Highlights from the latest quarterly report included:

  • another high growth period, with 2,328 persons population growth
  • an equivalent annual population growth rate of 4.43 per cent;
  • Redbank Plains again as the fastest growing suburb;
  • Spring Mountain with the highest number of new lots created and Ripley with the highest number of new lots approved;
  • 12,314m2 of new, non-residential building floor space, able to accommodate 165 new jobs;
  • 396 development applications lodged;
  • 941 plumbing applications lodged;
  • 3,562 building and plumbing inspections undertaken;
  • 22km of new roads and pathways delivered;
  • 2.25ha of new parks and open space;
  • 3 major strategic planning projects completed or underway.

“There has been incredibly strong growth across the city with more than 9000 new residents moving to Ipswich in the past year,” Cr Morrison said.

At 30 June 2018, there were 77,657 dwellings within Ipswich City as compared with 76,807 dwellings at 31 March 2018.

This represents an increase of 850 dwellings and an equivalent annual growth rate of 4.43 per cent.The population growth hot spots were Redbank Plains, Spring Mountain, South Ripley, Collingwood Park and Ripley.

This represents an annual change from the same quarter last year of 3,226 dwellings and 4.33 per cent and a five year average annual growth rate of 3.71 per cent.

“We continue to be the envy of local government areas throughout the state.”
