Is this Ipswich’s best kept beauty therapy secret?

One of the most constructive ways for TAFE beauty students to learn is by putting what they know into practice. That means you’re the winner – a $20 pedicure, $20 massage or $14 gel toenails to name but a few of the many bargains.
And we’re assured it’s one of the highest quality services in town.

Helping people feel good about how they look gives Lauren Weiss (pictured above) a real buzz. A student at TAFE Queensland’s Ipswich campus at Bundamba, Lauren is just weeks away from completing a Diploma in Beauty Therapy.

She is part of a team of students who, together with their teachers, operate Salon on Mary – the TAFE’s training salon and perhaps Ipswich’s best kept secret when it comes to beauty services.

Whether it be waxing, tinting, nail enhancements or manicures, pedicures, massages and facials, the salon offers them all at a fraction of what you would expect to pay.

The on-campus salon provides a real-world environment for students to hone their skills.

It is fully equipped and as Lauren explains, is a win-win for the community and students.

“Being able to work with real customers is awesome, it’s not quite as fast paced as a commercial salon but we still need to be able to do it all and work as a team,” she said.

“Customers who come here can expect the exact same service as a commercial salon, possibly even better service because everything has to be 100 per cent right.

“The only difference is the treatments are more affordable.”

Lauren decided to study beauty therapy after trying hairdressing.

“I tried hairdressing but it was just not for me so I decided to study beauty therapy. I immediately fell in love with it and I’ve found what I’m passionate about, I just love making customers happy,” she said.

Passing on passion drives teachers

The work of students at Salon on Mary is overseen by experienced and dedicated trainers.

Among them are Anita Fulcher and Lilex Wenck who combined have more than 20 years experience in beauty therapy.

Anita said she got into teaching about three years ago.

“I was working in a salon and used to see therapists who I had to retrain so I decided to get into teaching so I could make a difference and share my passion,” she said.

The story is much the same for Lilex who enjoys teaching students the importance of quality customer service and attention to detail.

Both agree the services on offer at Salon on Mary are top notch.

“Customers coming to Salon on Mary can be assured of great service, and the teachers are always here to assess the service being provided to make sure it’s of the highest quality,” Lilex said.

“What we’re able to provide is really good service and high end services at a fraction of the cost.”

Salon on Mary is on Mary Street, Bundamba. Contact the salon on 3817 3130.
