What the latest Census info says about Ipswich

The latest Census data on employment is out and it shines a light on the jobs we do and how we work.

If there’s one take out from the latest Census data on employment in Ipswich it’s that the city is well placed to capitalise on future opportunities.

With a median age of 32, five less than the state average of 37, Ipswich is a young and growing city. The latest figures reveal a greater percentage of the city’s workforce is in full time work (59.2%) than the state figure of 57.7%.

Ongoing growth in the defence industry is also starting to show, with defence now third among the top five responses for industry of employment. It did not feature in the top five for the 2011 Census.

This trend will only continue in the years ahead with an extra 2,800 jobs set to be created at Amberley by 2020. The city is also on the brink of a jobs bonanza if Rheinmetall Defence Australia wins a $5 billion contract to build the nation’s newest armoured vehicles, with the company keen to establish a military vehicle hub in Ipswich.

Who we are:

  • 50.6% of residents are female.
  • 49.4% of residents are male.
  • 32 is the median age of Ipswich residents.

  • 11.6% of people aged 15 and over provided unpaid assistance to a person with a disability (in the last two weeks at time of Census).
  • This was higher than the state average of 10.7%.

Employment status of parents in couple families:

  • 24.5% of Ipswich couple families with children had both partners employed full time.
  • This was higher than the state average of 22.5%.

Highest level of education:

  • 12% have a bachelor degree or above, lower than the state average of 18.3%.
  • 17% have a level 3 certificate, higher than the state average of 15.2%.
