Want to do your bit for your country and get plenty of puppy cuddles at the same time?
Military Working Dog (MWD) Abba has delivered a litter of six puppies at RAAF School of Fire and Security (RAAFSFS) at RAAF Base Amberley.
RAAFSFS breeding manager Mr Stephen Cannon said the caesarean birth made Belgian Malinois Abba a mother to one male and five female puppies.
“Abba was an absolute champion and we are pleased to announce that mum and pups are all healthy,” Mr Canon said.
“Our other brood dog Xola, who recently gave birth to two puppies, kindly stepped in to help Abba to feed her new puppies.
“We do have some of the best mums around.”
At eight-weeks of age, these MWD puppies will go out to civilian homes for weekend homestay as part of the RAAF MWD Puppy Foster Program; anyone in in South East Queensland area may apply.
Military working dogs and their handlers provide security, crime prevention patrols, emergency response, and intruder detection on RAAF Bases and in deployed locations around the world.
The two main breeds of military working dogs used by the Air Force are the German Shepherd and Belgian Shepherd Malinois. The dogs are often from Air Force’s own breeding program, and members of the public can volunteer to foster Air Force puppies.
After 12 weeks, the dogs then they go into full time foster care arrangement to socialise with families before returning to base at seven months of age for their military training to commence.
