Infrastructure and Emergency Management Committee Chairperson Councillor Cheryl Bromage said the $2.1 million project would soon welcome residents and local groups to share the new space.
“The centre will provide a safe place for the delivery of social services, a place for a range of community groups to meet, build social networks, and enhance the community’s capacity, pride and resilience,” she said.
Cr Bromage said the Queensland Government contributed $1.02 million towards the project, with council putting in the rest for this joint initiative.
The centre was largely pre-fabricated off site and then taken to School Road where building was completed.
Features include meeting areas, rooms for health clinics, a large deck with kitchen facilities, large hall that can be divided, toilets and parents’ room and a grassed area.
Council recently awarded the contract to run the centre to Multicultural Development Australia (MDA).
The organisation has considerable experience managing community facilities and will appoint a full-time community development coordinator to establish the Redbank Plains South Community Centre.
Division 9 Councillor Sheila Ireland said the centre would service the area’s growing multicultural community.
“Running parallel to the design and construction of the facility has been significant community engagement to ensure the finished building supports a strong and more connected population,” Cr Ireland said.
She said the centre would introduce new programs and services based on community feedback.
