An important new road has opened in Springfield, one of the suburbs boosting Ipswich’s position as Queensland’s fastest growing city.
Growth, Infrastructure and Waste Committee Chairperson Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding said Australia Avenue provides a critical link between Eden Station Drive, Southern Cross Circuit and Orion Springfield Central, easing pressure on the surrounding road network and improving access to the Centenary Highway.
“Seventy per cent of Ipswich’s growth is occurring in the corridor between Springfield and Ipswich Central. Australia Avenue will become an important link for easing congestion in this rapidly growing area,” Mayor Harding said.
“The construction of Australia Avenue has been delivered by Springfield City Group as a developer-contributed roadworks project and will now be handed over to council.”
Growth, Infrastructure and Waste Committee Deputy Chairperson and Division 2 Councillor Paul Tully said the opening of Australia Avenue helps traffic flow as upgrades continue on the nearby Springfield Parkway.
Roadwork on Springfield Parkway and Springfield Greenbank Arterial include the much-needed expansion from two to four lanes to best support efficient transport for Springfield and the city’s eastern corridor’s growing population.
“The opening of Australia Avenue is the completion of an important milestone in the development of Ipswich and will help traffic flow while work continues on Springfield Parkway”, Cr Tully said.
“Springfield Parkway is the largest road project Ipswich has undertaken and is currently progressing smoothly as key milestones continue to be met.”
With the expansion of Springfield Parkway, the Australia Avenue finalisation will be of great benefit for the community as access to Springfield Central Railway Station through to Southern Cross Circuit and the Orion shopping precinct is now easier.
Division 2 Councillor Nicole Jonic said the community would welcome the road’s opening.
“The opening of this developer-delivered road has been eagerly anticipated by our community and while council did not construct this road, I want to thank residents and motorists for their patience while it was built,” Cr Jonic said.
“These are important works for our city and it’s important as our city continues to grow that our road network also expands.”
Springfield City Group Executive General Manager of Planning and Infrastructure Brett Wilson welcomed the road’s opening.
“Springfield City Group always wants to assist with better transport linkages in Springfield Central,” Mr Wilson said.
“Our growing community enjoys the convenience of life in Greater Springfield and the opening of Australia Avenue will create better traffic conditions in this area.
“This project, combined with the current Springfield Greenbank Arterial upgrades and the planned duplication of the Augusta Parkway bridge over the Centenary Highway in 2024/25 by council, continues to ensure traffic is managed in a sustainable way.”
The Springfield Parkway is jointly funded by council and the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) Transport Infrastructure Development Scheme (TIDS).
