Nicholas St update: Core of administration building reaches new heights

It has been a busy start to the year for crews on the Nicholas St redevelopment as work ramps up following the holiday period.

About 100 workers are currently on site as work to construct a new civic plaza and council administration building continues.

The reinstated Nicholas Street roadway and upgraded footpaths were opened to pedestrians prior to Christmas.

Crews constructing the administration building have been focused on installing a concrete placing pump, installing precast columns and various concrete pours.

This week, the building core climbed to between ground level and level one and is now visible from above ground level. The basement carparks continue to take shape.

The eighth and ninth pours for the civic plaza have been completed this week with structural steel being installed for the library as well as work on lift and stair facilities.

The Nicholas St redevelopment is a $250 million council project focused on revitalising the heart of Ipswich.

It includes construction of a new council administration building, library and civic plaza as well as new retail, restaurant, recreation and entertainment precincts.

The restoration of the Commonwealth Hotel on Union Place, commonly known as Murphy’s Pub, is also being progressed as part of the redevelopment.
