River 94.9 tops first Ipswich radio survey results

The first Ipswich radio survey has seen River 94.9 dominate the ratings.

The survey, conducted by Xtra Insights, a company which is doing regional surveys throughout the country, showed 26.4% of all listeners in the greater Ipswich region listened to River 94.9 from Monday to Sunday.

The only demographics who seemed to be turned off by the local commercial station were at the two ends of the demographic spectrum – losing out to Hit105 in the 18-24 age bracket (31.1% for Hit105 against 19.7% for River) and to ABC Radio Brisbane in the 65-plus crowd of whom 20% tuned into Auntie, against 17.5% for River 94.9.

Overall, the second highest rating station was Hit105 with 14.3%, followed by 97.3FM (9.6%), Triple M (7%), ABC Radio Brisbane (6.2%), 4KQ 693 (5.9%), triple j (5.6%) and Nova 106.9 (5.6%).

Hit105 out-polled 94.9 in the younger sectors, but fell off a cliff with the over 40s. For example, in the 18-24 age group, Hit105 polled 31.1%, while River 94.9 polled just 19.7%. The 25-39-year-old sector polled 23.9% for River 94.9, and 23.3% for Hit105.

However, in the 40-54 age group, River 94.9 polled 35.1% of overall numbers, while Hit105 reached a mere 4.4%. Only 1% of listeners over 55, according to the survey, listen to Hit105.

The figures were almost the reverse for ABC Radio Brisbane. According to the survey, there were no listeners at all aged under 25, and just 1% under 40. That jumped to 20% for over 65s.

Morning radio, from 9am-noon was River 94.9’s star performer with 31.6% of the poll. Breakfast, Afternoon, Drive, Evening and Weekend all won their timeslots.

The poll said River 94.9 had 73,300 listeners from October 3-21, Hit105 had 42,100 listeners and 97.3FM 34,300 listeners in Ipswich.

River 94.9 general manager Shane O’Brien said: “The figures today reveal River 94.9 as the clear number one choice for our region, across all shifts and all demographics.

“We pride ourselves on being the most live, local and community connected radio station in town, and today’s result is testament to the enormous amount of hard work from the River 94.9 FM team over the past few years.”
