THEORY OF FLAW: NEW WORK BY MATTHEW CHEYNE

In his latest exhibition titled Theory of Flaw, local artist Matthew Cheyne is taking his work in a new direction. After graduating from Queensland College of Art in 2001, Matthew exhibited in Brisbane and Melbourne which led to his first European show in Berlin presenting a commissioned series of works created in collaboration with his wife Caroline, an electronic musician. After working and studying for five years in Europe, Matthew has returned home to Ipswich, establishing a studio in the outer rural suburb of Karalee. Since his return Matthew has spent time exploring techniques, making a break from the more considered compositions of his past work, in search of new opportunities that allow for chance. This experimentation became the framework for the Theory of Flaw.

Ipswich House Portraits from the collection

This selection of ‘house portraits’ examines the city’s significant domestic architectural heritage as seen through the eyes of contemporary Queensland artists.

These house portraits are more than mere pictorial representations of the city’s heritage-listed buildings, instead offering explorations into the architectural design, construction and fabrication methods while also exposing more than a hint of the personal histories and memories of their former residents.

Wind Tubes

Design and build your very own flying creation to test in the Wind Tubes. See your creation take flight and soar to the ceiling and defy gravity by hovering high overhead… or just fall to the floor. It’s all about air and invention, with a little bit of mid-air mayhem.

Wind Tubes is a hands-on exhibition that challenges you to make a flying creation out of everyday materials and launch it into large, clear vertical tubes of moving air.

Plastic, paper cups, polystyrene, ping pong balls, propellers and more … all the materials you need are provided. But can your design overcome turbulence, drag, air resistance and gravity?

Wind Tubes is a fun, interactive exhibition for the whole family. There’s a special space for children under two to enjoy.

WHEN: 10am – 5pm
