Sustainability in the Suburbs: How you can make a difference

The Ipswich community is leading the charge for change as part of the region’s new Sustainability in the Suburbs campaign.

Featuring a series of videos of Ipswich residents and local businesses sharing their sustainability stories, the campaign gives the community the opportunity to be directly involved in promoting sustainability and celebrating Ipswich’s grassroots environmental achievements.

Environment and Sustainability Committee chairperson Councillor Russell Milligan this week launched the new campaign.

“Our Sustainability in the Suburbs campaign is all about working together to protect and enhance our environment and its liveability now and into the future,” he said.

“It has so many different voices from our community offering their tips and tricks on various sustainability activities across the region.

“It features a number of local perspectives, from a Pine Mountain resident sharing his land restoration journey to the Ipswich businesses highlighting the different ways they are becoming more sustainable.”

He encouraged the Ipswich community to get involved in the campaign.

“Anyone can get involved by jumping on to the Sustainability in the Suburbs website or by sharing their own sustainability tips using #sustainableipswich,” Cr Milligan said.

The Sustainability in the Suburbs videos will be released on Ipswich First, with the first instalment – How to start a veggie patch for less than $100 – scheduled for release on Saturday, 22 August.

Cr Milligan said the campaign was in response to recent feedback from the community.

“We have taken community ideas and feedback from last year’s Sustainable Ipswich engagement, and are now sharing local stories focussing on these topics through the new campaign,” he said.

“Thanks to these activities and tips, residents and businesses can see how easy it is to be sustainable in a practical, grassroots way.”
