Ipswich City Council, together with several prominent community organisations and businesses, is launching a new way for the community to be involved in responding to and recovering from COVID-19.
The Ipswich Together program calls on residents, ratepayers, community groups and businesses to support each other under a theme of ‘because together we can do so much’.
Mayor Teresa Harding said it was about tapping into the city’s enduring community spirit to get through the pandemic.
“The COVID-19 pandemic is having unprecedented impacts across the world and at home, including right here in Ipswich,” Mayor Harding said.
“The pandemic is not only causing health impacts but also significant hardship for local businesses, many of which have been forced to reduce staff, change the way they trade and in some cases even close.
“The impact is also being felt in our homes with restrictions and isolation taking a toll on people’s mental health and wellbeing.
“However, as we’ve shown time and again over the years – through floods and fires – Ipswich is a city of innovative, resilient people and businesses who have the know-how and resources to get through this – together.”
Ipswich Together includes a range of community and council events and initiatives over the coming months to support our community through the pandemic.
Ipswich Hospital Foundation, Ipswich Regional Chamber of Commerce, Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce as well as media companies The Queensland Times and River 94.9 have partnered with council for Ipswich Together.
The next exciting Ipswich Together community event is Front Yard Friday which encourages residents to have fun and decorate their yards on the Ipswich Show Public Holiday – May 15.
“Sadly we cannot attend the Ipswich Show this year but we can still make show day one filled with fun, colour and excitement,” Mayor Harding said.
“We’re encouraging residents to decorate their driveways, set up in the front yard, order their favourite takeaway from a local business and spread a little joy,” Mayor Harding said.
“Ipswich radio station River 94.9 will be playing Front Yard Friday requests and council has created printable activities for kids to help them decorate their yard.”
Five key themes around response and recovery are at the heart of Ipswich Together. They are:
- Share accurate information and advice
- Stay connected and support isolated people
- Consider your actions and be kind
- Look after your wellbeing
- Support local business
“We’ve seen in the weeks since tough restrictions came into place how well our community has pulled together to do its bit to flatten the curve,” Mayor Harding said.
“By continuing to stand united in our response to COVID-19 but also during the recovery phase, our city will be well-placed to make the most of the opportunities ahead while ensuring we all make it through.
“While the restrictions are being relaxed this weekend, I strongly urge the community to continue to practice social distancing and remain safe and healthy.”
