The latest on the East Ipswich train station upgrade

Major works on the multi-million dollar East Ipswich station upgrade are on-track to begin later this year, with the contract for construction awarded earlier this month by the State Government.

Hutchinson Builders will deliver the makeover, supporting more than 250 jobs in construction, electrical, carpentry, plumbing and roofing – 90 per cent of which will be sourced locally.

Quotes are due by 14 November for the $20m to $30m project, and interested businesses should visit https://app.estimateone.com/s/hutchinson-qld/stage/203827 for more information.

Mayor Teresa Harding welcomed the investment which includes a new footbridge with lifts, raised platforms at assisted boarding points, hearing aid loops and tactile platform surfaces, a new bicycle enclosure, accessible parking and improved security through upgraded lighting and CCTV.

“Our city offers a great lifestyle for professionals and young families and our population is growing by the day,” Mayor Harding said.

“Investment in public transport infrastructure is critical to support this growth and enable more economic opportunities across the city.”

Mayor Harding recently met with Member for Ipswich Jennifer Howard to brief her on priority infrastructure projects, including the Ipswich to Springfield Public Transport Corridor.

“I am meeting with all sitting members and election candidates over the coming months to canvas support for much needed investment in our city,” Mayor Harding said.

Ms Howard, who earlier this year unveiled designs for the upgrade, said she looked forward to seeing jobs created and works get underway on an accessible station for all commuters.

“Our community has been overwhelmingly on board this project since we confirmed the upgrade two years ago, and I’ve made sure Queensland Rail has included many of the adjustments requested by the community so that locals requiring assisted mobility, families with prams or those carrying luggage, can use their local accessible station,” she said.

Ms Howard said the project is part of the State Government’s $357 million station accessibility upgrade program, and adds to other major transport projects like the $5.4 billion Cross River Rail and $371 million statewide smart ticketing system.
