Two weeks until the heart of Ipswich city comes alive once more – and you’re invited

The countdown to fun central is on.

In exactly two weeks, stage two of the Nicholas Street Precinct will come alive, with the official opening of Tulmur Place, the city’s new civic plaza, the Handmade Expo Markets and the “turning on” of the precinct’s water play zone all to take place on 28 November 2020.

It’s the first of many special event days planned for the new Tulmur Place, with 27 fabulous reasons to visit between 28 November and 20 December 2020, with an exciting events calendar currently being planned for 2021.

From the Handmade Expo Markets, and Future Food Flavours food truck event through to a Four Hearts Brewery pop-up bar, live entertainment from local artists on the Tulmur Place stage, school holiday events and activities, daily food trucks onsite, giveaways and guest DJs, locals are being urged to “come and explore” their new Nicholas Street Precinct.

The opening of the new Ipswich Central Library on 7 December is another great incentive to visit the precinct, which will quickly become a haven for arts, culture and entertainment in the city.

Deputy Mayor and Ipswich Central Redevelopment Chair Marnie Doyle said the opening of Tulmur Place is a major milestone of the second stage of the $250 million council project that focuses on bringing the community together in a civic plaza area.

“This area will be the centre piece of the redevelopment for regularly programmed events, small grassroots activities, through to major cultural and music events,” Cr Doyle said.

“Local talent will be able to perform here as well as being a focal point for community celebrations.

“It is an exciting time and we are looking forward to the fun times ahead for all our community. We encourage everyone to come along and join in and see what a fabulous space we have on offer in the heart of our city.”

The key to the success of the Nicholas Street Precinct comes down to the local community. Ipswich City Council wants to partner with as many local businesses and organisations as possible to help activate the space – no event is too big or too small, no idea too whacky or creative.

With 2021 planning currently underway, council is urging community groups, events, not-for-profits and businesses alike to officially register their interest in partnerships ASAP.

However, right now, the Nicholas Street Precinct team is focused on ensuring that local food trucks and food vendors have the opportunity to participate in the Future Food Flavours food truck event on Saturday 5 December, as well as pop-up opportunities throughout the launch period.

If you have a local mobile food or beverage business and would like to be part of the historic Tulmur Place opening events, we’d love to hear from you. Just visit the website at www.nicholasst.com.au and register your interest.

Cr Doyle said it was a chance for local businesses to shine and council would continue to support them.

“We are definitely a food truck friendly council and look forward to a weekend of excitement and entertainment.”

Ipswich has always loved a great food truck event and the Future Flavours Food Fair on Saturday 5 December promises to be bigger and better than ever with live local talent, flavours from around the globe, free activities for kids, the brand new water play zone – perfect for summer nights in Ipswich – and the fabulous Four Hearts Brewing Company popping up on the Tulmur deck.
