Where you can grab a bargain in Ipswich this weekend

Bargain hunters can grab an epic deal at more than 240 garage sale events across Ipswich this weekend, as part of the nationwide Garage Sale Trail.

Environment and Sustainability Committee chairperson Councillor Russell Milligan said it was a great opportunity for residents to save money and reduce waste in the lead up to Christmas.

“The final countdown is now on to Ipswich’s biggest weekend of garage sales, and with the festive season quickly approaching, there’s never been a better time to score a bargain,” Cr Milligan said.

“It’s also a great opportunity to shop locally and make this festive season a sustainable season.

“By shopping second hand you’ll be helping to reduce the impact of Christmas waste by cutting down on excess gifts and unnecessary packaging.”

Cr Milligan said it is easy for residents to participate with new ways to get involved both online and in person.

“This year’s event is sure to be a big hit with more than 5,000 people expected to take part in Ipswich’s garage sales,” Cr Milligan said.

“Residents can participate in person at one of the hundreds of garage sales happening across Ipswich or from the comfort of their own home via the virtual sales on the Garage Sale Trail website.

“Residents can also map out the sales they’d like to visit physically or virtually by searching the map and creating their own personal trail on the Garage Sale Trail website.”

Trail etiquette tips from the experts

Keep it clean

Sellers should clean and disinfect their items before sale day. If you’re concerned about handling money, consider taking online cashless payments.

Shoppers should keep a bottle of sanitiser handy and use it regularly when visiting the sales.

Keep your distance

Sellers should try to keep a table between themselves and their shoppers and ensure there’s enough space for their shoppers to move around. Use the distance markers and signage provided when you registered to remind people to stay physically distant.

If you’re shopping, be sure to stay at least 1.5 metres away from others.

Wear a mask

Sellers and shoppers alike may choose to wear a mask while participating in the Garage Sale Trail.

If you’re feeling unwell, take it online

If you’re feeling even a little bit sick, have a sniffle or have recently been in contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, take your selling or shopping online.
