Ash Barty wins third consecutive Newcombe Medal

Ipswich’s tennis superstar Ash Barty has capped off an outstanding year taking home her third consecutive Newcombe Medal on Monday night.

The 23-year-old was presented with Australian tennis’ top honour by legend John Newcombe at the Australian Tennis Awards ceremony.

In accepting the award Barty gave heartfelt thanks to those who have supported her journey.

“It takes a village and we are a big tennis family. I’m very humbled to be here tonight,” she said.

“I’m extremely fortunate to have such an amazing support network around me. It’s very special for me tonight to have Mum, Dad and my very first coach in Jim (Joyce) here.

“They gave me the unconditional love and support time and time again — in all the bad times and all the good times, they’re always there.

“Honestly it’s been incredible. I’m very grateful that they’re here to share it with me as well.”

John Newcombe awards Ash Barty with her 2019 Newcombe Medal.

After a dream year the World No. 1 also took out the title of 2019 Queensland Sport Star of the Year Award at the 25th Annual Queensland Sport Awards & Hall of Fame Presentation last week.

The third Newcombe Medal puts Barty level with Sam Stosur, the only other player to receive the accolade as many times.
