Cancer treatment centre proposed for Ipswich

A major new cancer treatment centre will be built in Ipswich if a development application by the owners of St Andrew’s Ipswich Private Hospital is successful.

The hospital’s operator, Ramsay Health Care, wants to build a four-storey centre to bring all of its onsite cancer diagnosis and treatment facilities under one roof.

It would include radiation services, imaging facilities, medical consultation offices, a single consulting day oncology and renal clinic, and associated amenities.

The new centre would be built in the southeast corner of the existing hospital site, closest to Thorn Street.

“The proposal seeks to provide a comprehensive cancer centre for the existing St Andrew’s Private Hospital in Ipswich,” the application notes.

“The proposed extension provides an improved medical offering to Ipswich, providing a larger oncology clinic and oncology screening area.

“In terms of built form, the proposed hospital is both sympathetic to the existing hospital and surrounding area, while providing a contemporary design.”

St Andrew’s Ipswich Private Hospital is a major part of the city’s CBD medical precinct.

It is a fully accredited advanced surgical, medical and obstetric hospital with 175 beds.

In recent years, a $64 million upgrade was delivered at the hospital which included the city’s first private hospital emergency department, a new maternity ward and a new Renal Dialysis Unit.

The hospital’s current services include:

  • 24 hour emergency department.
  • Operating theatres with high definition audio and video monitors.
  • Cardiac catheter laboratory.
  • Critical care unit with Intensive Care Unit, Coronary Care Unit and High Dependency Unit.
  • Day oncology/infusion centre.
  • Renal Dialysis Unit.
  • Maternity and paediatrics services.
  • Medical and surgical units.
  • Rehabilitation unit with gym and life skills area.
  • Onsite retail pharmacy.
  • Radiology services.

Ipswich City Council is considering the application.

The application, MCU-1646/2020, can be viewed via council’s PD Online service.
