Construction ramps up at Costco Bundamba site

It is an important milestone in any major project and this week it happened at the Costco Bundamba site – the official sod turning that is.

Construction for what will be the American retailer’s second Queensland store is ramping up in Ipswich and so too are the job opportunities.

There is no shortage of action at the Ashburn Road site with semi-trailer after semi-trailer laden with steel framing arriving this week, and earthworks well advanced.

On Tuesday, Costco Australia CEO Patrick Noone revealed the $50 million project would generate 90 jobs during construction, with 280 full-time and casual positions to follow once it was completed.

As well as the Costco store, the development includes 825 car parks and a 24-hour service station.

“We are delighted to be a part of the strong economic growth story in south-east Queensland and believe our outlet will boost economic activity and further activate Citiswich Business Park,” Mr Noone said.

Ipswich acting mayor Cr Wayne Wendt said there would be significant benefits for the region.

“There is a real buzz in the community about Costco coming to Ipswich,” he said.

“People are excited for the job opportunities it will bring as well as the competition it will inject into the local grocery and fuel markets.

“There will be other benefits as well. We expect the store will be a major drawcard, enticing shoppers from far and wide who want to partake in the Costco experience.

“It will also serve as a catalyst for investment in the region.”

Minister for State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning Cameron Dick officially turned the first sod at the development site.

“Costco’s 6.5 hectare site will include a 14,000 square metre warehouse and parking facilities, and will be another welcome addition to the $1 billion Citiswich Business Park,” Mr Dick said.

Construction is expected to be finished in November, with Costco hoping to open the store by Christmas this year.
