Ipswich City Council has made cyclist safety the priority in making the decision to not provide a detour around its works to construct Brassall Bikeway Stage 7.
This project is an initiative supported by the Queensland Government’s Cycle Network Local Government Grants Program.
General Manager of Infrastructure and Environment Charlie Dill said that council’s position regarding a detour around the Brassall Bikeway Stage 7 works remains unchanged.
“There is no safe alternative to get all users of the BVRT across the Warrego Highway while council works on the underpass as part of this project. A detour cannot be provided for this reason,” he said.
“A detour cannot be put in place and is not supported by council for safety reasons.
“While a detour cannot be provided around this 1.5km section of the BVRT for the duration of works, there are several alternative access points to the BVRT north of Bayley Road.
“We understand that there has been some confusion about the temporary closure. To clear this up, more copies of the existing signage will be installed at additional locations to advise users of the temporary closure of 1.5km of the BVRT and highlight the access point from the Borallon Station Road car park.”
Senior council representatives met with Ipswich West MP Jim Madden in the last fortnight to discuss the additional signage for the Brassall Bikeway Stage 7.
Additional signs will be erected on Friday 28 February 2020.
