Four new cases with one who attends an Ipswich school

Four new cases of COVID-19 have been recorded in the past 24 hours, all cases were close contacts of known cases.

One of the cases attends Staines Memorial College at Redbank Plains.

The school has already alerted students and families about the case.

Queensland Health Officer Dr Jeanette Young said the school has a very good system in place but it will be closed until cleaning and contact tracing has been completed.

“That work has already started and we will see how far we can get thought that today, whether it is able to open tomorrow or not,” Dr Young said.

The other three new cases live in one household at Forest Lake with two other confirmed cases.

“That is why it is so important that households do not have more than 10 people because we know that household to household transmission is a key trigger,” Dr Young said.

While she was confident there is no community transmission currently known, she said we should be alert and  urged people to get tested if they have any COVID-19 symptoms.

“We have now had over 101 days of infectious people out in our community in the last 14 days so that means there has been 101 opportunities for people to get infected so we know that we will see more cases,” she said.

“It is critical that people, if they have any symptoms at all, don’t think it’s anything else because it’s most likely to be COVID-19.”

Dr Young clarified the 101 days she referred to is the combination of all of the days people where known cases were infectious in the community over the last 14 days. That was correct as of Friday, 28 August.

There are many other COVID testing locations in the West Moreton region, with some requiring a referral from your GP. See the full list here: https://www.westmoreton.health.qld.gov.au/coronavirus

Queensland Health authorities are urging anyone who displays even the mildest symptoms to get tested.

Symptoms of COVID-19 can include a fever, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, runny nose, fatigue or loss of taste or smell.
