Ipswich City Council has announced the judges for the Ipswich Art Awards 2020.

She has enjoyed a varied career as a curator, writer and educator at institutions including the National Gallery of Australia, Australian National University and Newcastle Art Gallery. She was also Curator at The University of Queensland Art Museum (2010–2018).

Simon Mee is a well-known Queensland-based artist. He currently lives and works in Toowoomba where he holds the position of lecturer (Collections Curator and Arts Management) at the University of Southern Queensland. Simon has an extensive career as curator, artist and judge. He continues to exhibit his own artwork both locally and internationally, and he has received numerous awards and prizes.

The Ipswich Art Awards 2020 will be bigger and better than ever as a stand-alone event in May.

Held annually since 2000, the awards have been and are the foremost visual arts awards for the Ipswich region, attracting around 200 entries and 2,000 spectators every year.

The primary purpose of the Ipswich Art Awards is to profile established and emerging artists of the Ipswich region, providing a platform for engagement, recognition and professional development.

The awards will be held from 15 May to 24 May, from 10am-3pm daily at the North Ipswich Reserve Corporate Centre. The opening night (15 May) will be a ticketed event, while admission to the exhibition is free.

Council’s General Manager of Community, Cultural and Economic Development Ben Pole said the arts community provided valuable feedback from last year and council had listened closely in planning the 2020 event.

“The Ipswich Art Awards 2020 will be bigger and better than ever,” he said.

“There will be more categories and all entries will be displayed at a 10-day exhibition in a new venue.

“There are seven categories this year and entry is $30 per submission (maximum of two artworks) – which includes complimentary artist entry to the opening night.”

Categories:

  • Painting: acrylic and oil
  • Painting: watercolour
  • Drawing and pastels
  • Three Dimensions

There will also be a ‘Best in Show’ winner selected, with the successful artist precluded from winning any other category. There is more than $13,000 in prize money.
