PASSES to Australia Zoo, movie tickets and books are among the prizes members of this year’s Ipswich Libraries Summer Reading Club can win just by enjoying a good book.

The club is open to children aged up to 18, with participants who register and read a minimum of five books between 1 December and 31 January eligible to win a great prize.

Ipswich City Council Library Services Manager Sylvia Swalling said the Summer Reading Club aimed to keep children reading over the holiday period.

“Evidence shows that children tend to do less reading over the summer holiday period,” she said.

“The Summer Reading Club is a fun and rewarding way to encourage children to keep up their reading, which is important for the continued development of their literacy skills.”

The theme for this year’s Summer Reading Club is Curious Creatures and Ipswich Libraries is hosting a series of great events over the school holidays to inspire young readers. These include:

  • Curious Creatures Switched On – take robotic creatures on a new adventure;
  • Curious Creature Revealed – bring your inner animal to life through a dynamic drama workshop;
  • Curious Creatures Uncovered – take home a fossil cast and learn about the job of a palaeo artist with a real palaeontologist;
  • Curious Creatures Challenged – creature themed family trivia night.

As an extra incentive for children to read even more, after the first book they read and log online, they will receive a Curious Creature Body, and with each additional book read and logged they will receive a choice of a Creature Feature to help gradually build their own downloadable Curious Creature.

The club will conclude with an invitation-only celebration in mid-February for children who have read and logged a minimum of five books. Prize winners will be announced at this event, which will also include other fun activities.

To register for the Ipswich Libraries Summer Reading Club, come along to the launch on Saturday, 1 December from 10am to noon at Ipswich Central Library or Springfield Central Library and pick up your welcome pack, or visit www.ipswichlibraries.com.au from 1 December.

Summer Reading Club is a national initiative supported by Ipswich Libraries.
