Safety has been improved for pedestrians and road users around one of Ipswich’s busiest schools in time for students’ return to classrooms this week.
A school zone has been installed on Wulkuraka-Connection Road encompassing the intersection of Keswick Road outside of West Moreton Anglican College.
The school zone for this section of road will reduce the speed limit from 80km/h to 60km/h during morning and afternoon school peak times.
Mayor Teresa Harding thanked the local community for its collaboration and input on the safety measures.
“This new school zone is a wonderful example of what can be achieved when council and the community work together,” Mayor Harding said.
Division 4 Councillor Russell Milligan said he was pleased council was able to work closely with the school community to achieve a positive outcome.
“On being approached by the school community, council undertook a safety review, including collecting traffic count data and reviewing crash history, which supported a school zone to improve safety at this location,” Cr Milligan said.
“It is about delivering safety solutions that align with our iGO Road Safety Action Plan and meeting the needs of our growing community now and into the future.”
Division 4 Councillor Kate Kunzelmann said improving safety near schools was important for encouraging more local families to embrace active travel options.
“We know that for our community to embrace active travel options such as walking and cycling to and from school, they need to feel safe,” Cr Kunzelmann said.
West Moreton Anglican College principal Geoff McLay said the school community appreciated council’s support.
“Reducing the speed zone from 80km/h to 60km/h during school peak times is a major step towards improving the safety conditions for the WestMAC community and is certainly most welcome news as we commence the new school year,” Mr McLay said.
I was surprised that the school zone was not extended further north to encompass the Larsens Road intersection. This is a busy intersection, especially after school, with many inexperienced P plated drivers leaving the school grounds and turning onto Wulkuraka Connection Rd.
Why can’t they put the speed limit down to 60 km an hour at Larson’s road I live across the road from there I have two driveways and I cannot go out at 3:00 or 9:00 in the morning because of the overtaking Lane and the traffic is ridiculous and the seniors rev their bloody vehicles when leaving at 3:00 in the afternoon or late night I might be going to a current affair shortly I’m channel 9 to complain about this if nothing is done about it
