Olympic speed skater named 2018 Ipswich Senior Sportsperson of the Year

SHORT track speed skater Deanna Lockett won Ipswich Senior Sportsperson of the Year at the 2018 City of Ipswich Sports Awards

The awards ceremony was held Friday November 9 at North Ipswich Reserve Corporate Centre.

Deanna has been crowned Australian National Champion for the past five years having competed in short track speed skating at both the 2014 and 2018 winter Olympics.

Junior Sportsperson of the Year was awarded to Tamzin Christoffel who was selected to represent Australian at the Taekwondo Oceania Championships and Presidents Cup in Tahiti.

Tamzin is currently ranked 36th in the world and received a scholarship from the Queensland Academy of Sport Prospecting for Gold program. This program is designed to assist athletes get to the Olympic Games.

All eight category winners received their awards in recognition of personal achievements and contribution to local sport on and off the field.

Chief Operating Officer for Ipswich City Council’s Works, Parks and Recreation Department Bryce Hines presented the awards in front of a capacity audience and said the quality of nominations for 2018 was outstanding.

“Council received more than 100 nominations for the ninth annual awards.

“Our region has a strong sporting pedigree with many of our young sports men and women aspiring to one day compete at the Olympics.

“Ipswich also has an enviable sporting history with success in many sports.

“Council is proud to support local sporting clubs with a very high standard of facilities across the city.

“This also makes Ipswich an ideal location to host state and national titles.”

Mr Hines congratulated all nominees and category winners and said they are all worthy champions.
