One thing about elections is that it gets people out and about. Luckily, this weekend there’s plenty to do in and around Ipswich. Take your pick.
1. Open Day
The RAAF Base Amberley Aviation Heritage Centre has an open day on Sunday, August 20. Don’t forget to take your ID – you can fill out a form prior to attending to skip the queue. Find it here. Be warned that there might be a few delays while security staff positively identify and record all visitors.

2. Handmade Expo
Ipswich Market celebrates its 9th birthday on Saturday with The Handmade Expo. Here’s a note from the organisers: “We have so much happening, including chances to win a prize hamper simply by shopping at the market.”

3. Bee Gees tribute
This show will have you digging out your flares and dusting off your platform shoes in preparation for a party which celebrates 40 years since The Bee Gees redefined pop music with the release of the Saturday Night Fever album.

4. Vietnam Vets Concert
Dennis Knight and the Black Cats perform for a Vietnam Vets Day Concert. It’s a rock n roll show with plenty of old hits. And some trivia – Dennis was once managed by the late Johnny O’Keefe.

5. Jam Session
It’s a good old fashioned jam session. Musicians from Ipswich and surrounding areas gather, and you never know who might turn up or who will join them on stage. Everyone is welcome to join in.

6. JETS V CUTTERS
The Jets will be looking to cut down Mackay as Ipswich hosts its final Intrust Super Cup game of 2017 this weekend. The finals are officially out of reach but the boys are aiming to finish the season on a high with only two games remaining.

7. ARTIST TALK
Hear the stories behind Ipswich artist Lyne Marshall’s latest exhibition. Enjoy a selection of wine, beer, softdrinks and finger food and discover the new book that accompanies Lyne’s work.

8. PARK RUN
Step out at the weekly Augustine Heights parkrun. The 5km run is fun and social – it’s just you against the clock.

9. RACE YA MATE
Strap in and hold on as you race your car down Willowbank’s iconic quarter-mile strip. There’s a stack of highly sensible safety regulations for this one, so check out the Willowbank website for full T&Cs.

10. Theatre Class
S-Troupe gives young people with disabilities the opportunioty to perform and learn theatre skills. Performances are interactive with the audience and aim to expose talented Special Actors to a wide range of artistic activities.

11. Vietnam Veterans Day
The day begins with prade fall-in at Evan Marginson Park, Woogaroo St, Goodna. The parade arrives at the cenotaph at Goodna Services Club at 5pm, where there will be a ceremony and commemorative service. The service finishes between 5.45pm and 6pm. At the club, there will be live entertainment by the David Lee Band from 8pm until midnight.
