Over 50 and not engaged? Seniors week can help you

Seniors Week is on next week. If you are 50 or over, it is a one stop shop of information. The week will showcase choices for seniors who want to engage in social and recreational activities.
Ipswich offers a very large array of services and activities for seniors.

U3A Ipswich and West Moreton president Paulette Montaigne said there is no reason for seniors in Ipswich to feel alone.
“If you want to be active in Ipswich, the list of things to do is endless,” she said.

“However, there are still so many who are not active. If you connect with a seniors group they will help find the thing that is right for you.

“It may be that you are not a very social person, but you would love to learn something new, then there will be a group for that.”

One of the first events on for the week is the See Create Connect Expo. The theory is to come along and see new and interesting ways to enjoy retirement, create a life of fun, interests,  create new adventures and connect with other like-minded people wanting to get the most out of life.

The beauty of the See Create Connect Expo is that there are so many service providers under the one roof.

“My pet hate as a senior is being told ‘just go and look on the internet’,” Ms Montaigne said.

“Here you can walk around and talk to people who want to genuinely engage with you.

“Come and give it a go, everything that takes your fancy, give everything a go.”

There will be more than 50 local organisations and groups attending the event including small arts and craft groups, government organisations, recreational organisations, health services and support services.

Arts and Community Development Committee chair Councillor Kylie Stoneman said seniors should be supported in their retirement.

“Ipswich City Council is holding a series of events in Ipswich to connect seniors to local services and recreational activities. We want to invite Ipswich seniors to embrace the week and join in all the fun activities on offer,” Cr Stoneman said.

“Seniors contribute a great deal to our City. This week is a celebration of the valuable role seniors play and it also gives a number of local organisations the chance to highlight what services and activities they can provide.

“I am proud to be supporting a large range out events during the week.”
