Planning and Development spokesman Cr David Morrison said council recently approved plans for a new multi-purpose hall on Parkland Drive at Springfield Central.
“The hall will be built on council-owned land next to Springfield Central State High School and is the result of co-investment by Ipswich City Council and Education Queensland,” he said.
“It’s a great partnership. Council and the school will share use of the facility once it is built.
“On the ground level there will be two multi-purpose sports courts, amenities, a kiosk and serveries, storage areas and meeting rooms.
“The upper level will include additional amenities, learning areas and a staff room for use by Springfield Central State High School.”
Space has also been set aside for meeting rooms and amenities to be added at a later date as part of stage two of the project.
Cr Morrison said the centre would cater for the growing Springfield area.
“Council’s planning has identified a need for additional recreation and community facilities to meet the future needs of Springfield Central, Springfield Lakes, Springfield, Bellbird Park and Brookwater,” he said.
“Co-locating a community space with a sports facility enables greater community use and a variety of functions to be delivered from the multipurpose centre.
“It’s a win-win situation for Springfield Central State High School and the wider community.”
“This is an exciting project and securing the necessary planning approval means it can now move to the next stage,” she said.
“It will bring significant benefits to the community not only by improving local sporting facilities, but also by providing a space that could be used by community services providers.
“I’m very pleased that we have been able to work with the state government and Springfield Central State High School to make this happen.
“The hall will be built in a growing part of the city and I have no doubt it will be a valuable community asset for many years to come.”
Springfield Central State High School has more than 1,400 students enrolled, 97 teachers and 40 non-teaching staff and volunteers.
It is expected as well as making use of the hall during school hours that some extracurricular activities will take place in the hall.
An existing car park and set down area will service the hall.
How about some kerb and channel on Willow Road Redbank Plains? The school there has 1500 students. There is no proper place to park or for parents to drop off or pick up students. Before revamping a skate park there in Redbank Plains or giving land to another school with parking and kerb and channel for a sports and community centre, complete Redbank Plains Rec Reserve kerb and channelling. And also a safe bus turnaround area.
