Temporary cameras for Tony Merrell Park

Temporary cameras will be installed in Tony Merrell Park, Leichhardt, to address ongoing community concerns about anti-social activity in the park.

Ipswich City Council Chief Executive Officer Sonia Cooper said council has had numerous complaints from residents about the illegal use of trail bikes in the park.

“Installing these temporary cameras will help council monitor for poor behaviour in our public park, and deter further illegal activity,” Ms Cooper said.

“Council has consulted with the Queensland Police Service, which supports the placement of these cameras.

“Recordings captured by these cameras may assist police in investigations into this behaviour.”

Although not part of council’s formal Safe City network of more than 375 public-safety cameras, Safe City will oversee and assist police in the use of these cameras.

Council urges anyone who observes illegal or antisocial activity to report the issue to police via Policelink on 131 444. In an emergency, call Triple Zero.

Ipswich City Council is operating under caretaker provisions in accordance with Chapter 3, Part 5 of the Local Government Act 2009. Media communications by the Mayor and Councillors as ICC spokespeople during this time are limited to ensure compliance with legislation and, equity and transparency between existing Mayor, Councillors and candidates regarding access to Council resources.
