Things to do on the weekend, August 12-13

Make your weekend the best it can be by tapping into some local entertainment. We’ve listed 11 possibilities.
1. Taleena Peck

Taleena Peck returns to the old Baptist church alongside fellow indie artists Sarah Harling, Unbranded and Laura Luscombe. This is your ticket to a live and loud night out in Ipswich.

When: Friday August 11, 8pm

Where: Studio 188, 188 Brisbane Street, Ipswich

Cost: $12 per person or $10 per person for groups of five or more pre-purchased, $15 per person at the door.

2. FRIDAY NIGHT DRIFT

Strap yourself in, and fuel your need for speed at this practice session for top drivers, newcomers and social drivers. Put your skills to the test at Ipswich’s home of motorsport.

When: Friday August 11. Gates open at 4.30pm with on-track action from 6pm

Where: Queensland Raceway, Champions Way, Willowbank

Cost: Gate entry is $20 per person

3. ESTAMPA

Combining violin, voice, piano accordion and double bass, this group of fiery musicians is known for energetic, internationally-inspired performances.

When: Saturday, 12 August, 8pm

Where: Studio 188, 188 Brisbane Street, Ipswich

Cost: $25 each or $72 for a table of four

4. Learn to act

Ipswich group, S-Troupe, features young performers with disabilities and celebrates its 25th birthday in 2017. They’re hosting a theatre class and festival performance on Sunday afternoon, and it’s free to pop along.

When: Sunday, 13 August, 3pm to 5.30pm

Where: Incinerator Theatre Complex, Burley Griffin Drive, Ipswich

Cost: Free

5. CASINO ROYALE

Support the 1200kms for Kids Charity Bike Ride and raise money for the Children’s Hospital Foundation at this Casino Royale-inspired event. $25 worth of funny money can be gambled at the “casino” and later used to bid on auction items.

When: Saturday, 12 August, 7pm

Where: Orion Hotel, 1 Main Street, Springfield Central

Cost: $50 per person

6. YOGA IN THE PARK

Dagwood dogs are so Ekka – let’s try a downward dog instead. Free yoga for all ages and abilities, designed to keep the community moving as part of the Ipswich City Council’s active parks program. Remember to bring water and a towel.

When: Saturday, 12 August, 7.30am

Where: Spring Lake Park, 55 Burlington Terrace, Springfield Lakes

Cost: Free

7. IPSWICH HERITAGE DAY

Step back in time and experience the Ipswich of yesteryear with presentations, displays and hands-on activities. A special session will look at the iconic corner stores of Ipswich.

When: Sunday, 13 August, 10am

Where: Cooneana Heritage Centre, Redbank Plains Road, New Chum

Cost: $5 per person

8. LIGHT PLAY FOR KIDS

The children’s gallery has been transformed into an evolving light scape where kids can explore their artistic potential. Play with overhead projectors, explore transparency, reflection and shadow and see the gallery through a kaleidoscope of colour.

When: Now until Sunday, 27 August from 2pm to 5pm weekdays and 10am to 5pm on weekends

Where: Ipswich Art Gallery, d’Arcy Doyle Place, Ipswich

Cost: Free

9. CLEARANCE SALE

Bag a bargain at the Jeanswest Clearance Sale with tops, bottoms and accessories at perfect prices. It’s a huge clothing sale in the heart of the Ipswich CBD.

When: Today (9am to 5.30pm), tomorrow (9am to 5pm) and Sunday (10am to 3.30pm)

Where: Ipswich Civic Centre, Nicholas Street, Ipswich

Cost: Free, but you’ll have to pay for the clothes

10. IPSWICH PARK RUN

Put your best foot forward and join the park run movement right here in Ipswich. The 5km run is fun and social – it’s just you against the clock.

When: Saturday, 12 August, 7am

Where: Bill Paterson Oval, Ipswich

Cost: Free

11. HOTROD REUNION

Hundreds of amazing machines on two and four wheels will descend on Queensland’s premier drag racing facility with high-octane action on and off the track.

When: Sunday, 13 August, gates open at 6am with qualifying from 8am

Where: Willowbank Raceway, Champions Way, Willowbank

Cost: $25 for adults, $20 for students with ID and free for children under 13
