Two new cases of COVID-19 in Ipswich

Two new COVID-19 cases have been reported by Queensland Health.

The cases are in Ipswich; one is a nurse at Ipswich Hospital and the other is a student who attends Staines Memorial College.

The 37 year-old male nurse from Deebing Heights has been working in the COVID-19 ward at the hospital and had an unusual symptom.

“He had identified abdominal pain which is not normally considered a symptom of COVID-19, but he was incredibly wise and he identified that was a symptom that could have be from COVID-19,” Health Minister Miles said.

“He went and got tested and that test came back positive.”

The second case is a second student who attends Staines memorial College.

The 18-year-old is from Redbank Plains and is already in quarantine.

The school continues to be closed.

Another third case was identified yesterday after a 48-year-old man from Victoria who had previously tested positive, arrived on a flight Monday.

Authorities had been trying to locate him in Victoria and will now investigate if he has committed a crime.

He arrived on a Jetstar flight on Monday at 9.19am on flight JQ560.

There will now be contact tracing done for that flight.

Chief Health Officer Jeannette Young again wanted to remind people to wear a mask if they are in the South-East corner and unable to socially distance.

West Moreton Health Chief Executive Officer Kerrie Freeman praised frontline staff for moving quickly to make additional testing clinics work.

“Our amazing staff on the frontline are supported by behind-the-scenes teams who ensure the clinics run smoothly,” Dr Freeman said.

“This united approach has enabled us to quickly stand up extra clinics to ensure the safety of our community. Thank you to our staff and partners for this impressive effort.”

Dr Freeman said the community had been supportive and she thanked the public for coming out to be tested.

“Thank you to everyone who visited clinics to be tested. We have opened extra clinics across the West Moreton region and recommend anyone who has even mild symptoms get tested.

“Being tested for COVID-19 at the first sign of symptoms is key to keeping community transmission out of Queensland.”

Symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, runny nose, fatigue or loss of taste or smell.
