5 June 2020: COVID-19 updates #ipswichtogether

4pm. That’s a wrap

That’s all from us for today’s #ipswichtogether COVID-19 blog. It’s also the last daily blog we will be producing for now.

We will continue to publish important community updates and information on Ipswich First as they come up and as restrictions continue to ease.

Be sure to check in for regular updates and follow the Ipswich City Council Facebook page.

Remember to practice good hygiene and stay safe. We’re all in this together. #ispwichtogether

3.20pm. Lifting spirits with hidden artwork

An Ipswich artist is lifting community spirit by making artwork then hiding it around town for people to find.

Magenta Quinn has been in isolation since before restrictions were put in place more than two months ago as she had some medical concerns with her lungs.

She was inspired to give her art away after someone in The Kindness Pandemic Facebook group had done something similar.

“I read someone was hiding their art like people do with rock art and I thought, I’ve got artwork, I can do this,” Ms Quinn said.

Each Thursday, Ms Quinn updates her Facebook page with clues about where she has hidden her latest artworks.

The restrictions calling for the community to stay at home as been difficult for many and Ms Quinn said while she is hoping to uplift others when they find her art, it has also been good for her own mental health.

“It’s so much fun and having this project to work on has helped me with my own mental health,” she said.

“Being creative has kept me happy.”

2.50pm. Tell your story

We all have a story to tell. Picture Ipswich digital archivist and historian Melanie Rush can help you tell yours.

“Oral histories are part of the ancient tradition of storytelling, a way to pass on knowledge, memory and experience from one generation to the next,” Miss Rush said.

Ipswich Libraries is running a workshop Recording Your Memories: a beginner’s guide to oral history which will show how to record your memories using a mobile phone.

The workshop will be conducted online via Zoom on Tuesday, 9 June at 6pm.

You can register here.

Once registered an email with a ‘Join Zoom Meeting’ link will be sent prior to the event.

Registrations close Tuesday 9 June at 9am.

11.20am. Karalee goes cosmic

The Ipswich Art Gallery may still be another week away from reopening, but there’s been plenty of art to enjoy on our streets in recent weeks, thanks to the Pavement Art’s Alive competition.

It’s the final day of the Ipswich Festivals’ competition, in partnership with Arts Alive Ipswich, which encourages Ipswich residents to get creative and turn their footpaths into mini galleries.

Check out the video below to see one of the entries from father and son team, Clay and Jasper.

They’ve turned their Karalee street into a galaxy, with interactive QR codes taking you to their YouTube videos:

8am. Friday, 5 June. Zero active cases in Ipswich

There are currently no active cases of coronavirus in the West Moreton Health region, with all 38 cases having recovered.

Queensland has no new cases of COVID-19 since Queensland Health reported at midday yesterday, however, the total cases have increased by one to include a historical case.

This is not a current case – the person had a history of COVID-19 infection a few months earlier while overseas.

Currently, 1,016 of the 1,060 cases had recently travelled overseas or interstate, or had close contact with a confirmed case, such as their partner or flatmate.

A total of 208,758 tests for COVID-19 have been undertaken in Queensland, with 4,436 tests undertaken in the previous 24 hours.

Most Queenslanders who have contracted COVID-19 have experienced mild symptoms.

Two of the three active cases are in hospital, with one being treated in intensive care.

The remaining active case is currently recovering at home.

A total of 1,046 Queenslanders (99 per cent of total cases) have now recovered from COVID-19.

Contact tracing continues for recent cases.
