Bookworms rewarded for holiday reading

Ipswich literacy lovers have been rewarded at the annual Summer Reading Club celebration.

The program was held over the Christmas-New Year holidays for young people up to 17 years of age, celebrating a “Game On” theme.

Libraries and Tourism Committee Chairperson Cr David Pahlke said the popular program, in its 19th year, encouraged people to make reading a regular part of their lives.

“Whether it’s reading or being read to, we want people of all ages to embrace reading as an exciting, entertaining and engaging activity, particularly during the holidays when they have more free time,” he said.

Cr Pahlke said prizes were recently awarded at an Ipswich Libraries event.

Winners included: Emily Lambert (1st prize, Secondary), Leonie Fludder (3rd prize, Pre-school), Malachi Drew (2nd prize, Pre-school), Louella Cass (2nd prize, Primary). Cr Palhke and Cr Sheila Ireland were on hand to deliver the prizes.

“This year we introduced a School Participation Prize and this was awarded to Ipswich East State School. Ildika Koppin (teacher/librarian) accepted the trophy on behalf of the school. Ildika was able to fill the basket with a selection of new books for the Ipswich East school library,” Cr Pahlke said.

“Each year Ipswich Libraries run this program to encourage Ipswich’s young people to enjoy the pleasure of reading. We want them to read for pleasure and use libraries all year round, not just for study and homework.”

“It is wonderful to see the way in which the city’s young people are keen to be part of the program which encourages them to use their local library and read more over the school holiday period,” Cr Ireland said.
