It’s exciting times for cricket and AFL clubs in Division 1 as council calls for expressions of interest for the use of a brand-new sports facility in South Ripley.
Division 1 Councillor Pye Augustine said the Goolpahjo Harry Thompson Senior Park would be able to hold cricket and AFL games for the 2026-27 season and council is looking for clubs to call the new facility home.
“All interested clubs must submit their expressions of interest through council’s online system to ensure a consistent and transparent assessment process,” Cr Augustine said.
“The expressions of interest process will require information such as membership data, evidence of community engagement and partnerships, operational sustainability and experience in maintaining turf cricket blocks.
“The sports loving residents of Division 1 will be the real winners of this process, with yet another recreational facility being made available for the community.
“South Ripley is one of the fastest growing suburbs in Ipswich so a sporting facility like this was a much-needed addition to the area as Ipswich and Division 1 continue growing at unprecedented rates.
“I look forward to seeing exciting games of cricket and AFL take to this wonderful new facility.”
Division 1 Councillor Jacob Madsen said council has already been contacted by several clubs interested in securing tenure for the new oval.
“We are calling for expressions of interest to take over this brand-new facility which includes an irrigated oval with a turf wicket block, field lighting, four lane practice nets, an amenities block and a car park,” Cr Madsen said.
“A facility like this means sport will become more accessible to residents in the area, further promoting an active and healthy lifestyle.
“It is well known that Ipswich is a sports mad city and we produce more than our fair share of Aussie sporting legends – that comes from our sporting culture, which is rooted in our local clubs and the facilities they use.
“Council has worked with AFL Queensland and Queensland Cricket to ensure compliance with the peak bodies of these sports which means players and staff will have access to national standard facilities.
“Council is committed to providing high quality facilities and programs for residents to lead active and healthy lifestyles.”
Expressions of interest close at midnight on 17 May 2026 and can be registered at https://ipswich.smartygrants.com.au/GoolpahjoHarryThompsonSeniorParkEOI
