Get a $2 haircut or shave and support students

As the Queensland Government’s COVID-19 restrictions continue to ease, hairdressing and barbering students at TAFE Queensland’s Ipswich campus have resumed their training and welcomed customers back to their on-campus salon at Bundamba.

To celebrate their reopening, Salon on Mary’s students are offering locals the chance to get a haircut or face shave for just $2 until the end of June.

With just months to go in his barbering course, Pablo Andlovec says he’s thrilled to be back in the salon, perfecting his craft and gaining valuable industry experience.

“It’s so good to be back and to have customers again,” Mr Andlovec said.

“It’s been tough not being in the salon because of coronavirus. We need to practise in a real-life environment to make sure we have all those professional skills.”

Becoming a barber has been a big career change for Mr Andlovec, who left his role as a procurement specialist in the mining sector in favour of something more creative.

“I decided to make the change and do something I actually like,” Mr Andlovec said.

“I’m quite artistic and have been a ballroom dancer for years, so I thought I should do something which is more creative and one day open my own barber shop.”

Salon on Mary has reopened in accordance with the Queensland Government’s Roadmap and is closely following Queensland Health advice. This means that physical distancing and capacity limits are being adhered to, along with extensive cleaning.

Hairdressing and Barbering tutor Milly Howick, who oversees students’ work, said the return of customers was crucial to help students hone their skills.

“We’re particularly looking to get more people in for gents’ haircuts, face shaving and head shaving,” Ms Howick said.

Ms Howick said the salon’s services are a win-win for customers who are looking to stretch their dollars further, while also getting high quality services and providing hands-on experience to students on the cusp of entering the professional field.

“If you’re wanting something new or different, we recommend you book in for a consultation so we can talk it through with the students, and we also encourage our customers to be patient as things may take a little longer while students are learning,” Ms Howick said.

Regular customer Jeffrey Hesse said he’s always been happy with the results at Salon on Mary.

“They do a good job,” Mr Hesse said.

“I haven’t had a cut since the virus, so it’s been about 10 or 12 weeks now,” Mr Hesse said.

“It’s felt like quite a wait, so I’m glad they’ve reopened. I’m well overdue for a haircut.”
