Good luck for all on Friday the 13th Ipswich Show Holiday

Friday the 13th may be unlucky for some, but not for the residents of Ipswich as Friday 13 May is confirmed as the 2022 Ipswich Show Holiday.

The Community, Culture, Arts and Sport Committee recommended accepting the nominated public holiday date for next year.

Mayor Teresa Harding said she wondered if the show’s 149th edition would have a “spooky theme on Black Friday”.

“I can’t wait to see all the ghouls jumping out on the horror ride,” said Committee Chair Cr Andrew Fechner.

The Ipswich Show was back in full force this year after being cancelled due to COVID restrictions last year.

“It is one of the largest community events in the region and one loved by the Ipswich community,” Mayor Harding said.

“The show public holiday is a perfect opportunity to get along to the opening day and experience all the fun at sideshow alley, the wonderful entertainment, food and of course the show bags.

“We are looking forward to 2022 and the following year when we will celebrate the 150th anniversary.”

Prior to 2011, the Ipswich Show public holiday was held on a Thursday until Education Queensland denied the request due to State NAPLAN testing.

The Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) has been contacted, with the date for NAPLAN testing set for between 10-20 May 2022, although specific testing days are yet to be confirmed.

The 13 May 2022 date will officially be signed off at the full Ipswich City Council meeting on 22 July and the Queensland Government then notified.

The annual three-day show attracts more than 30,000 people has an estimated economic benefit to the City of Ipswich of more than $1 million.
