How dog owners can save money by shopping locally

It’s possible to find big savings for your pooch in Ipswich, as Jane Pinder discovers.

Around Ipswich there are many ways to save money without compromising on care for the four-legged family member. Here are four to get you started:

Ipswich City Council registration rewards program Registering your dog comes with a booklet with more than $3,000 worth of vouchers for a range of pet products and services including vaccination, desexing, training and dental care.

Health and Community Safety Committee Chairperson Councillor Sheila Ireland said this year’s booklet, released this month, has added restaurants, leisure businesses and pet friendly cafes to the program. “It feels good to be thanked and rewarded for our efforts. That is what the Ipswich Registration Rewards Program is all about,” Cr Ireland said.

Facebook – Many Ipswich pet related businesses are active on Facebook, and clicking ‘like’ can keep you up to date with special offers and savings. Flinders View Veterinary Surgery’s Dr Andrew Hemming said they used different media, including Facebook and a mail-out newsletter, to reach pet owners. Recent promotions included complementary dental checks, and a free information night on dental health, promoted through Facebook.

“It’s the staff who drive it, we use it as an educational tool as well. It’s often your loyal clients, the ones who comment (on the posts),” he said.

Package deals – There can be discounts or extras on offer for things such as extended boarding or booking multiple treatments. Barbara Kirkpatrick from the family-owned Links Pet & Canine Aquatic Centre offered extra value with items such as a 10-pack of swim sessions, or a Deluxe Daycare package with assisted swim, hydrobath, on-lead training session, lunch and playtime for $70.

“That’s very good value,” she said. “A lot of customers are looking for daycare, they live in the Ipswich area and work in the city, and the convenience of the dog having time away from the home. We have dogs that come every day, and maybe have the deluxe package twice a week.”

Free loyalty programs – Save over the long-term on your essentials by signing up to a loyalty program. One program, called Friends for Life, offers rewards points on all transactions in Greencross Vets, Petbarn and City Farmers stores and Petbarn online. Savings and benefits include free DIY dog wash, discounts on pet food and $10 vouchers.

  1. We just took out dog registration on 18/8/2016 and did not receive the booklet of $3000 of discount vouchers. The system is broken (situation normal) and our dog is not a happy chap
