Eleven Ipswich artists will have their works showcased like never before when they are projected onto the city’s most iconic heritage building, St Mary’s Church, later this year.
The artists have been chosen to headline the deLight event, which will be a key attraction of 2021 SPARK Ipswich – the reimagined Ipswich Festival.
DeLight will run over 11 days from 8 to 18 July and include the projection of art onto St Mary’s Church.
Mayor Teresa Harding said supporting the city’s creators is a priority for council.
“This council is committed to fostering opportunities, advocating for, and promoting our city’s vibrant creative sector,” Mayor Harding said.
“St Mary’s Church is one of Ipswich’s most iconic heritage sites, and it will be a wonderful canvas to showcase our local art.”
Community, Culture, Arts and Sports Committee chairperson Councillor Andrew Fechner said the 11 artists were chosen following a competitive expressions of interest process.
“I want to thank all 25 artists who put their names forward during the expressions of interest process – the calibre of entries received was very high,” Cr Fechner said.
“In choosing the 11 artists who will take part this year the judging panel looked for diversity across the exhibition including art forms, artists and content.
“Consideration was also given as to whether the artworks submitted would translate well to the projection medium.
“The works chosen reflect the culture of Ipswich, its people and places.”
Artist Charmaine Davis is among those chosen and said she is excited by the opportunity to have her work projected for all to see.
“It’s an honour to have been selected and great to see the arts receiving more prominence in Ipswich, and I’m looking forward to being involved,” Ms Davis said.
“To have local art projected onto such an iconic landmark for all in the community to see is a fantastic opportunity.
“Ipswich is such a multicultural community and I’m proud as a First Nations artist that my art will be projected up there on the church, which I’ve long had a connection to with my daughters having attended St Mary’s College.”
DeLight aligns with NAIDOC Week 2021 which runs from 4 to 11 July 2021.
