Ipswich teens to take centre stage at Queensland Ballet workshop

Ipswich youngsters aged 13 to 17 will have the opportunity to learn ballet, contemporary and hip-hop moves in a program developed by some of the state’s top dancers, as Queensland Ballet delivers the QB Teen Unite Immersion Weekend in partnership with council.

The new program, sparked by conversations between the Queensland Ballet’s artistic director Li Cunxin and local stakeholders at council’s 2020 Creators of Ipswich Summit, combines dance lessons with workshops on wellbeing, mentorship, and entrepreneurship for teens.

Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding said it was fantastic to see the results of council’s push for greater collaboration with State-level arts groups in action.

“Creators of Ipswich was a watershed for our arts sector, bringing stakeholders from across the creative community together to discuss our the most effective forms of council support and our strategy for the years ahead,” Mayor Harding said.

“The conversation started with Mr Cunxin’s thoughtful keynote address, and we were privileged to discuss our ideas in depth with such an accomplished performer and sector leader.

“The QB Teen Unite Immersion Weekend is a wonderful opportunity for dancers to connect with peers, build leadership skills and gain insights from industry professionals in both arts and business.”

Community, Culture, Arts and Sport Committee Chair Councillor Andrew Fechner said hosting the QB Teen Unite Immersion Weekend in Ipswich was a real coup for the city.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for talented local dancers to learn from Queensland’s best right here at home,” Cr Fechner said.

“This is not just for ballet dancers, the program will cover contemporary dance and hip-hop, as well as exploring how to turn a passion for dance into a dance career.”

Queensland Ballet has specifically designed QB Teen Unite Immersion Weekend for Ipswich teens as part of its push to engage with communities across the state and make arts accessible to the regions.
