The luminous displays of St Nicholas Precinct headline a line-up of school holiday events in Ipswich that will have everyone asking, “what social media?”.
Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding said St Nicholas Precinct in the city centre, from Friday, 12 December to Sunday, 21 December, is the marquee event of the Christmas in Ipswich festival.
“The festive spirit of our ongoing Christmas in Ipswich festival reaches its crescendo as our award-winning city heart Nicholas Street Precinct is transformed into the St Nicholas Precinct every evening from Friday, 12 December to Sunday, 21 December,” Mayor Harding said.
“The precinct will dazzle with awe-inspiring Christmas light displays made up of thousands of luminescent bulbs, interactive installations and food trucks for the perfect night out for families celebrating the joy of the season.
“Local music and performance acts will grace the stage of Tulmur Place providing live and free entertainment, while the wares of local businesses will be on offer at market stalls.
“For those seeking a gentler experience, a Low Sensory Night will be held in the precinct on the evening of Monday, 15 December.
“There’s no better time than Christmas to indulge in a hearty meal, so after seeing the lights, stay to enjoy Nicholas Street Precinct’s many great dining offerings, including Hotel Commonwealth, Kickin’Inn, General Public, Vapiano and Hello Harry.
“Nicholas Street Precinct won’t be the only place to spend time making memories these holidays, with Ipswich Libraries, Ipswich Nature Centre and Ipswich Art Gallery also having lots on for children and families across December and January.
“This will be an unforgettable summer holidays in Ipswich with so many opportunities for children to play and learn with their loved ones, catering for a wide range of interests.”
Economic and Cultural Development Committee Chairperson Councillor Pye Augustine said St Nicholas Precinct is a celebration of the spirit of the season.
“Across the more than 40 events making up the Christmas in Ipswich festival, St Nicholas Precinct is among my favourites as it brings people together in the heart of our city to bask in the festive cheer,” Cr Augustine said.
“For more wonderful experiences these school holidays, don’t forget to check out the educational and enjoyable programs throughout our council libraries in Ipswich Central, Rosewood, Redbank, Redbank Plains and Springfield Central.
“Ipswich Libraries offer the joy of learning whether it be for children interested in reading, Lego, robotics, craft, dance, animation and much more.
“The Summer Reading Program for children up to the age of 17 is a fantastic way to foster love of the written word, complete with interactive elements such as fun challenges and creative activities, with the program featuring a pirate theme.
“Creative minds will be stimulated through programs such as the Write Your Own Adventure Workshop, Clay Critters Workshop, Road Test a Robot, Busy Builders Lego, Digital Cut-Out Animation and Build a Buddy Workshop.
“The festive spirit also lives on at our libraries with Christmas Disco and Bookish Baubles and Ornaments drop-ins, while the Pirate Adventure Stage Show is fun for the whole family.”

Division 3 Councillor Marnie Doyle said St Nicholas Precinct highlighted Nicholas Street Precinct’s growing reputation as the premier place for community gatherings in Ipswich.
“St Nicholas Precinct is fast becoming a beloved holiday tradition for our wonderful city, made possible by the revitalisation of our city heart through the successful Nicholas Street Precinct development,” Cr Doyle said.
“Division 3 is a certainly the place to be these school holidays, with Ipswich Art Gallery also providing a highlight of the summer break.
“Families can explore the magic of motion and STEAM-based creativity at Ipswich Art Gallery’s Move It! exhibition.
“This interactive exhibition challenges children to bring out their inner engineer as they build and race a Lego car, create a flying machine to test in wind tubes and build a ball run using a range of items.”

Division 3 Councillor Andrew Antoniolli said St Nicholas Precinct promises 10 days of family-friendly fun.
“St Nicholas Precinct has provided many joyous moments since it began in 2021 – and I’m sure the fifth edition will be no different,” Cr Antoniolli said.
“The school holidays are a fantastic time for Ipswich, with Ipswich Nature Centre’s stunning display of locally native flora and fauna a great way to give children an opportunity to reconnect with nature.
“The Queens Park Environmental Education Centre will be holding crafts and play activities, while children can also go on an hour-long mission in Queens Park through the Agents of Discovery mobile app game, which presents educational nature-based challenges to complete.”
