Adventurer Josh ‘The Bear’ Kerr has been all over Ipswich this past month, capturing the city’s mountains, city streets and sights.
Kerr was chosen from an enthusiastic field of adventurers who responded to a ‘Human Wanted’ campaign run by Ipswich City Council to find the person who would map the region on foot.
The Google Trekker is a device fitted with 15 cameras which record photos every 2.5 seconds to provide 360 views as the ‘human trekker’ walks through a location.

A cracking run of terrific weather has kept the Google Trekker on schedule.

“It’s full on, go go go all the time,” Kerr said.

“I’m really enjoying it. I’m always in a different place seeing different things.”

On social media, he calls himself ‘The Bear Master’.

Kerr is no stranger to the outdoors – he works as an activities guide for Spicers Peak Lodge and he grew up in the Ipswich region.

The former Amberley District State School and West Moreton Anglican College student has developed a keen interest in hiking in recent years, enjoying both the fitness and photography elements – as well as the views from the top.

Google’s game-changing Street View Trekker program is part of the company’s efforts to make the most comprehensive map of the world available to everyone supporting both locals, visitors and businesses ability to see what Ipswich has but is not readily known.

This project, once completed, will have recorded +40 locations (commercial and council owned) making the city the first place in Australia to be so extensively documented by Google Maps.

Doing so will allow people to use Google Maps in a few months with the ability to visually experience Ipswich’s heritage locations, tourism attractions, hiking, biking and walking trails, literally putting Ipswich on the map for the world to see.

Next week the trekker will be mounted on a canoe to map the Bremer and Brisbane Rivers or you can see the Google Trekker device for yourself at the Visitor Information Centre on weekends (9am-4pm).
