Wanted: U13 footy players to kick-start Ipswich Eagles girls team

Ben Thompson, Chris Devlin and Nick Barlow started a juniors side to the Ipswich Eagles five years ago.

Ben Thompson was a player, and his brother was the president at the time.

“I’ve got a young boy who wanted to start playing and at that time we didn’t have a juniors program,” Mr Thompson said.

“So we just started one. Originally we started with just 10 kids split between U6 and U8.

“In just five years we now we have 103 registered kids.

“The girls teams really took off after the AFLW launched three years ago.”

All the junior divisions are covered off for both boys and girls teams except the U13 girls.

“We’ve got six girls who want to start a team and we really need another six,” Mr Thompson said.

“It’s a really good inclusive environment. They only play other girls so it’s the same ability and skill level. It’s about having a good time and having fun.”

Daisy Mins used to play netball, but she is enjoying the higher level of physicality in the game.

“I like it because it is a contact sport. I like the tackling and you run more,” Ms Mins said.

“You also make heaps of new friends.”

Hanah McLeer is looking forward to playing her first year this year also.

“I have never played a team sport before and I have found AFL is a really fun sport,” Ms McLeer said.

Mr Thompson said the players he has are very keen to start a team.

“They are training already. We train Tuesday and Thursday nights at 5pm,” he said.
