No new cases overnight, still important to get tested if unwell

No new cases of COVID-19 have been recorded overnight, following 8059 tests conducted state-wide on Monday.

Almost 6300 of those test were from areas affected by the Brisbane Youth Detention Centre cluster.

Chief Health Officer, Dr Jeannette Young confirmed on Tuesday the Ipswich woman who was the first confirmed case in the Brisbane Youth Detention Centre is not the zero case for that cluster.

“There will be someone else who led to the outbreak,” Dr Young said.

Early genome sequencing has indicated the detention centre cluster could be linked to one of three women who went down to Melbourne as they have the same viral strain.

“I need more information over the next 24 hours to prove it but at this stage it looks like they could be linked,” she said.

“But we don’t have the case between the two clusters.

“So that is why it is so important we do our absolute best to find every single case because the cases we don’t find are the cases that can lead to chains of transmission, if we can’t get on top of them, we can’t manage them.”

Several staff have had to be relieved from the Ipswich Hospital emergency department who were potentially exposed and are now in quarantine.

“One of the relatives who was a confirmed case was admitted to Ipswich Hospital for another condition on 19 August so we’ve had to contact trace all of the staff because she was admitted during her infectious period, not necessarily symptomatic but during the period she could transmit the virus,” Dr Young said.

Health Minister Steven Miles said he was relieved there were no new cases overnight but warned there was still “a long way to go before we know we have controlled this possible outbreak”.

There are 18 active cases of COVID-19 in Queensland with six of those in the West Moreton region.

Fever clinics are specialist clinics managed by Hospital and Health Services that assess people who may be infected with COVID-19.

These clinics help to keep people who may be contagious away from other areas of hospitals and health centres.

This helps to reduce the potential spread of the virus and keeps the emergency department available for emergencies.

Testing is free.
