Plans in place to make sure red lid bins are collected

Your household waste bin will still be collected under Ipswich City Council plans to keep essential services functioning in the COVID-19 pandemic.

Currently regular waste and recycling services have not been impacted and residents are advised to continue putting out their rubbish, recycling and green waste bins as per normal.

Both Riverview and Rosewood transfer stations are open but only accepting EFTPOS card payment to reduce public health impacts.

However, CEO David Farmer said that due to the current pandemic, there were fewer bays open for people, which would lead to long queues.

“Easter is a notoriously busy time when people decide to clean up their yards and houses, particularly now that people will be staying at home over the four-day break,” he said.

“This creates problems at the refuse stations, so we encourage people to stay away where possible.”

Mr Farmer said council had taken action to keep the city running even if the community faces an extended period of isolation restrictions.

“Waste services are vital for the health of our neighbourhoods,” he said.

“But the reality is at some point our ability to provide full kerbside waste collection services may be affected by this pandemic crisis.

“We need to be prepared to make some short-term sacrifices to ensure city-wide household waste services continue for all.”

Mr Farmer said if household waste services were under pressure, council is developing contingency plans for a number of scenarios.

Any measures that are taken will be communicated on council’s website ipswich.qld.gov.au, via Ipswich First and council social media channels as they happen.

Mr Farmer said Riverview and Rosewood transfer stations were open but may also be impacted by staffing issues should the COVID-19 situation worsen.

“Now is not the time to do a household clean-out and a trip to the transfer station. Please stay at home, practice social distancing and help us reduce the spread of this virus,” Mr Farmer said.

“However, please know that our highest priority will be to maintain the weekly red bin service.”

  1. As a pensioner, I would prefer a green bin at home than going to the tip.
Why can’t pensioners get a free green bin if they request one?
It would support social distancing and relieve the pressure on the tips.
