Ipswich sows garden goodness for Mother’s Day

An amazing response to Ipswich City Council’s Trees for Mum initiative will see more than 900 seed packs being planted this weekend in gardens across the city.

Ipswich City Council has come up with a creative way to keep the popular Trees for Mum event going in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The annual event, which normally attracts hundreds of people each year on Mother’s Day for a community tree planting, could not go ahead in its usual form on 10 May this year.

Infrastructure and Environment General Manager Charlie Dill said it would have been a shame to cancel it completely, so council developed a ‘virtual’ event that people could do in their backyards.

“Not only is it a wonderful way for people to honour their mothers or the special women in their lives, it also has the environmental benefit of native species being planted in local areas,” he said.

Participants were able to register online for a native seed pack. Initially 250 seed packs were offered, but the overwhelming demand from the Ipswich community ended up seeing more than 900 seed packs sent to local homes.

“We would love for you to take a photo of you planting your native seeds and share it with us using #sustainableipswich,” Mr Dill said.

“Plant as a family on Mother’s Day, or plant a seed in honour of your mum.

“Your native plant will provide habitat and shelter for birds, bees and butterflies in your backyard. Natives are easy to maintain, use less water and support a healthy natural environment across Ipswich.”
