Learn how to save money at Sustainable Ipswich’s Big Day of Inspiration

Ipswich and regional speakers who live and breathe sustainability will share their tips as part of the 2022 Sustainable Ipswich program.

Environment and Sustainability Committee Chairperson Councillor Russell Milligan said Saturday 8 October would be a chance to exchange ideas with like-minded people on saving waste and saving money at home.

“We are excited to have ‘Eco Granny’ Rose Rush and sustainability blogger Nicole Lutze hosting free sessions on how small changes can have a big impact on reducing household waste,” Cr Milligan said.

“Mallow Sustainability will also be sharing tips on how to compost and FOGO like a pro.”

Councillor Milligan said these sessions were perfect timing with council’s kerbside green waste service recently being rebranded as Food Organics Garden Organics (FOGO).

“The FOGO bin takes food scraps as well as garden waste,” Cr Milligan said.

“It is now easy to divert this food and organic matter from landfill by putting it in a FOGO bin, and in doing so reduce harmful greenhouse gases.”

The event at council’s building at 1 Nicholas Street, Ipswich Central, will also feature a recycled material play session for families.

Ipswich Libraries will also be presenting an Upcycled Rag Rugs workshop on the day.

Eco Granny’ said she was looking forward to sharing her knowledge and experiences with people in the Ipswich community.

“Food waste equals money waste – it is a simple equation. People throw mountains of food into the bin each week and probably do not see the dollars that go into the bin at the same time,” Ms Rush said.

“You are never too young or old to learn to live a more sustainable lifestyle. There are simple things you can start doing now.

“I am not an expert or perfect. I always say just do something – anything – that will help our planet.”

Sustainable Ipswich is an annual celebration of everyday actions we can take as a community to create a more liveable city.

It is an opportunity for the community and local businesses to be involved in promoting and celebrating sustainability and our environment.

Sharing stories, knowledge and ideas helps us all live, eat and play the sustainable way!

By working together and making informed choices, we can create a liveable and resilient city for current and future generations.
